Southern Environmental Law Center

South Carolina Energy Staff Attorney

Apply Now
Description

The Southern Environmental Law Center is accepting applications for a staff attorney position working on clean air and energy and solar energy law and policy in South Carolina. The position will be based in SELC’s Charleston, South Carolina office, and is open to practicing attorneys with three or more years of experience. The start date is as soon as possible.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an organization that is successfully addressing some of the most important and challenging environmental issues in the Southeast and the nation. The staff attorney will advocate and litigate on clean air and electric power sector policies, particularly solar energy policies, at the state and federal level, including before public utilities commissions.

About SELC: With nine offices across the region (Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; Birmingham, AL; Nashville, TN; Asheville, NC; and Richmond, VA), SELC is widely recognized as the Southeast’s foremost environmental organization and regional leader. For over thirty years, SELC has worked on a full range of environmental issues to protect the South’s natural resources and the health and well-being of its people. Although our regional focus is the Southeast, much of our work is national in scope and impact.

SELC works in Congress and state legislatures to inform environmental laws; in regulatory agencies to implement environmental laws and policies; and in the courts to enforce the law, stop the worst abuses, and set important precedents. We work collaboratively with more than 100 national, state, and local groups to enhance their efficacy and achieve common conservation goals. We have a staff of 160, with more than 80 attorneys, including some of the nation’s leading experts in their respective fields. Additional information regarding our work and staff is available at www.southernenvironment.org.
SELC prides itself on collegiality, teamwork, and mutual respect among its staff and board. We seek to bring these same values to our work in partnership with organizations, communities, and people of all backgrounds that share our mission to protect the environment of the South. The South has a rich natural diversity and an equally rich cultural diversity. To better fulfill its mission, SELC is committed to broadening the diversity of its staff. We believe this will strengthen our organization and our effectiveness in responding to the many environmental challenges affecting the South and its people.

About the position: Region-wide, SELC’s Clean Energy and Air program works to advance smart energy choices by reducing our region’s over-reliance on outdated fossil fuels and by promoting development of solar power and energy efficiency. The staff attorney will take on these efforts in South Carolina, with a focus on solar power issues. The state historically has relied heavily on fossil fuels to generate electricity. And despite its abundant sunshine, solar energy is a vastly underutilized resource. Existing policies and standard utility practices also limit investments in energy efficiency resources that could reduce electricity use and lower customer bills, which are among the highest in the nation. The staff attorney is expected to meet these challenges by working with other members of our South Carolina office and our regional Clean Energy and Air team and by engaging with clean energy and energy efficiency advocates, business leaders, and policy makers. Work may include policy analysis and development in various settings at the state and federal level, as well as advocacy in state and federal courts and before the state public service commission.

Qualifications and Compensation: We seek an attorney with strong advocacy skills, strong work ethic, and a sense of initiative. The ideal candidate will be a skilled and multi-faceted lawyer with excellent academic credentials, a background in energy and environmental law, strong communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work well in a collegial setting, and a strong personal commitment to SELC’s mission. A strong academic background and commitment to SELC’s mission are required. Background in air and energy issues; solar law, policy, and economics; and litigation before courts and public service commissions is strongly preferred. SELC offers salaries competitive with leading national environmental non-profits and an excellent benefits package.

To Apply: If you have these qualifications and are seeking one of the most interesting, challenging, and rewarding environmental advocacy positions available, please send your letter of interest, resume, law school transcript (with date of birth and social security number redacted), and at least three references to Katie Storer at VAjobs@selcva.org. Interested persons should apply now. PLEASE INCLUDE “SC ENERGY STAFF ATTORNEY APPLICATION” IN THE SUBJECT LINE.

SELC is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strongly encourages applications from persons of all backgrounds.
