Due to the untimely passing of the Honorable Joseph M. Griffin, The Register of Wills for Montgomery County, a vacancy exists. The Judges of the Circuit Court will fill the vacancy until the next general election. Interested persons should follow the attached link for more information and application instructions. Requirements
Due to the untimely passing of the Honorable Joseph M. Griffin, Register of Wills for Montgomery County, Maryland, a vacancy exists. Per Md Const. art. IV, section 41: In the event of a vacancy in the office of the Register of Wills, said vacancy shall be filled by the Judges of the Orphans’ Court in which such vacancy occurs, until the next general election for Delegates to the General Assembly when a register shall be elected to serve for four years thereafter. Accordingly, the Judges of the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland, sitting as the Orphans’ Court for Montgomery County, Maryland, seek qualified candidates interested in serving as Register of Wills until the next general election. Duties of the Register of Wills Manage an office of forty persons. Oversee the administration of estates in Montgomery County, MD. Certifies documents for estate tax. Calculates inheritance tax. Independently elected position. (See Maryland Board of Elections website) Salary set by statute: $146,500.00. Maryland employee benefit package available. Serve as an active member of the Maryland Register of Wills Association. Prohibited from rendering legal advice and practicing law. Desirable characteristics for the position include, but are not limited to: Evidence of strong organizational and leadership skills. Four-year college degree. Clean criminal record. (Candidates will be subject to a background check.) Professional management experience. Demonstrated knowledge of Estate Administration and Inheritance Tax law. Knowledge of Maryland Circuit Court policies and procedures. Public speaking skills. Ability to run for election in the General Election of 2026. Interested persons should submit: 1. Resume 2.
