Position Description:
We are seeking a creative, curious self-starter with a positive attitude and team focus to support all aspects of the business with legal expertise. In this position, you'll collaborate with a team (consisting of four members) and manage the company's overall commercial requirements. You will work closely with the sales team on customer contract negotiation and the higher-consequence vendor contract negotiation. While the role focuses on commercial transactions, we seek someone with the confidence to assume generalist responsibilities, since our company is constantly growing and changing and innovating. Opportunities include advising on legal issues surrounding product development, data strategy, and privacy/cybersecurity, FinTech/payments law, and machine learning/AI governance. You may also work on M&A, including diligence and the subsequent operational integration. International expansion is also likely.
Preference will be given to candidates located within the Eastern Time Zone.
Position Duties:
- Develop a nuanced understanding of Motus and our industry, with an eye towards aligning decisions with the bigger picture goals. Provide related internal and market-facing thought leadership.
- Advise on legal issues affecting our business, primarily SaaS contracts negotiation, data protection/privacy agreements.
- Take ownership for the entire client contracting cycle from initial draft to execution, working with business teams to drive contract negotiations to timely and successful completion.
- Monitor, research and analyze existing law and changes in laws and/or statutes and regulations to evaluate and assess impact on the company and assist in developing necessary product or process changes.
- Collaborate with technology and security teams regarding data privacy & security, including vendor diligence and process management.
- Oversee and lead outside counsel in areas where additional subject matter expertise is required.
- Develop an understanding and knowledge of applicable tax, insurance, FinTech/payments, privacy, and more.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and are currently a member of the bar (in good standing) in a U.S. jurisdiction.
- 5 years practicing law. Candidates with a blend of legal practice in both law firms and corporate settings, or those seeking to transition from law firm to in-house practice.
- B2B SaaS experience and ideally B2C experience a plus.
- Strong negotiation skills that bring deals to close effectively and positively.
- Ability to clearly, concisely, and persuasively explain legal issues and can translate these concepts for broader consumption.
- An advancing perspective allows you to work autonomously with minimal mentorship, while also demonstrating good judgment and raising concerns when necessary.
- Ability to negotiate data processing agreements and related privacy requirements, including a proven understanding of CCPA and GDPR as they relate to commercial contracts.
- Experience navigating regulations related to financial services/payments, marketing, and have commercial litigation experience, a plus.
- You are proactive, assertive, and capable of handling and prioritizing multiple tasks.
- Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills enable effective connections across levels and regions.
- You have excellent business judgment and are both detail oriented and practical with a high level of professional and personal integrity.
Where required by law, Motus provides a reasonable range of compensation for specific roles. The pay range for this role is $200,000-$240,000. Actual compensation will depend on a number of factors, including the candidates relevant experience, technical skills, and other qualifications. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation based on individual and/or company performance.
